Why visit Unawatuna

A lively beach escape near historic Galle

Unawatuna is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known south-coast beach towns, combining a curved sandy bay, warm tropical water, restaurants and easy access to Galle. It is a convenient choice for travellers who want beach time without being isolated from the attractions of the surrounding coast.
Beyond the main beach, the surrounding Rumassala area, Jungle Beach and Japanese Peace Pagoda provide opportunities to explore away from the busiest part of town. Galle Fort is only a short journey away, making Unawatuna particularly useful for travellers who want to combine the beach with history and culture.

Essential planning

Know before you go

01

When to visit

December to March is generally the best period for Unawatuna, when Sri Lanka’s south-west coast usually experiences sunnier weather and calmer sea conditions.
April can also be enjoyable, while the southwest monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas during parts of May to September. Even during the main season, always check local sea conditions before swimming.

02

Getting to Unawatuna

Unawatuna is around 5 kilometres south-east of central Galle, making it easy to reach by tuk-tuk, taxi, bus or private transfer.
If travelling from Colombo, you can take the coastal railway towards Galle and continue to Unawatuna by local transport. Travellers already staying in Galle can reach the beach quickly by tuk-tuk, making it easy to combine both destinations.

03

Where to stay

Stay close to Unawatuna Beach if you want restaurants, cafés and the sea within walking distance.
For a quieter atmosphere, look towards the edges of the bay, Rumassala or Dalawella, where accommodation tends to feel more removed from the busiest central strip.
Check the exact location before booking, as properties marketed as Unawatuna can be spread across several neighbouring coastal areas.

Start the morning beside Unawatuna Bay, when the beach is quieter and temperatures are more comfortable.
After some beach time, head towards Rumassala, the forested headland separating Unawatuna from Galle Harbour. The area is known for its biodiversity, coastal scenery and coral reefs.
Visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda or continue towards Jungle Beach before returning to Unawatuna later in the day.
Finish back at the main beach as the afternoon cools. Combining the bay with Rumassala shows a quieter and greener side of Unawatuna beyond its restaurants and beach bars.

Suggested stay

Three days in Unawatuna

Day One

Beach and slow arrival

Settle into Unawatuna and spend your first day around the main beach and bay.

Swim when conditions are suitable, explore the small streets behind the beach and keep the afternoon relaxed after travelling.

Finish with dinner close to the coast and an easy evening.

Day Two

Rumassala and Jungle Beach

Use the morning to explore Rumassala, the Japanese Peace Pagoda and Jungle Beach.

Return to Unawatuna later for swimming, cafés or more time beside the sea rather than adding another long journey.

If snorkelling interests you, check current sea conditions and use a reputable local operator. Coral reefs and marine life are found off the Unawatuna and Rumassala coast.

Day Three

Galle Fort

Make the short journey to Galle Fort and spend several hours exploring its historic streets, ramparts and colonial architecture.
