Why visit Galle
Galle combines one of Sri Lanka’s most atmospheric historic centres with a beautiful position beside the Indian Ocean. At its heart is Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with narrow streets, colonial-era buildings, churches, cafés, boutiques and sea-facing ramparts.
The fortified town was established by the Portuguese in the 16th century and developed extensively under Dutch rule. Today, the blend of European architecture and South Asian influences makes Galle very different from anywhere else on the island.

Essential planning
01
When to visit
December to March is generally the best period for visiting Galle, bringing drier conditions to Sri Lanka’s south-west coast and comfortable weather for exploring the Fort.
Galle can be visited year-round, although the southwest monsoon brings more rain from around May to September. Whatever the season, early mornings and late afternoons are particularly pleasant for walking around the ramparts.
02
Getting to Galle
Galle is well connected to Colombo and the south coast by train, bus and road. The coastal railway is a popular option, with the journey following parts of Sri Lanka’s western shoreline.
Private transfers and expressway buses are also convenient, particularly if you are travelling with luggage. From Galle, tuk-tuks and local buses make it easy to continue towards nearby beaches such as Unawatuna.
03
Where to stay
Stay inside Galle Fort if you want historic streets, cafés, restaurants and the ramparts just outside your accommodation. It is the most atmospheric option for a first visit, especially in the evening after many day visitors have left.
Accommodation outside the Fort is often more affordable and can be convenient if you are continuing along the south coast. Travellers wanting more beach time may prefer to stay in Unawatuna and visit Galle as a short trip.
Signature Experience
Arrive inside Galle Fort in the late afternoon and explore the streets slowly before making your way towards the ramparts.
Walk past historic buildings, churches and small courtyards before reaching the coastline around the lighthouse and southern walls.
Continue along the fortifications as the temperature drops and the Indian Ocean changes colour towards sunset. The walls and bastions were designed around the rocky coastal landscape and remain one of the defining features of the UNESCO-listed old town.
After sunset, return through the Fort’s quieter streets for dinner. Staying into the evening reveals a much calmer side of Galle than a quick daytime visit.
Suggested stay
Spend your first day exploring Galle Fort on foot. Wander through its narrow streets, visit the lighthouse and historic churches, stop at small cafés and take time to explore beyond the busiest routes.
In the late afternoon, head towards the ramparts and stay for sunset over the Indian Ocean before having dinner inside the Fort
Use your second day to explore beyond the Fort. Visit Galle town and its local markets, or make the short journey to Unawatuna for beach time.
Return to Galle later in the day for another relaxed walk, café stop or final meal before continuing along Sri Lanka’s south coast.
