Why visit Weligama
Weligama is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular places to learn to surf, thanks to its wide sandy bay, consistent beginner-friendly waves and easy-going beach atmosphere. The coastline around the town also combines coconut groves, rocky headlands and traditional fishing scenes.
It is less compact than nearby Mirissa but has a more spacious feel, with surf schools, cafés and accommodation spread along the bay. Weligama also works well as a base for exploring Mirissa, Midigama, Ahangama and the wider south coast.

Essential planning
01
When to visit
December to March is generally the best period for Weligama, when Sri Lanka’s south-west coast usually has sunnier weather and calmer sea conditions.
This is also the main surf season for the south coast. Conditions vary day by day, so beginners should choose lessons based on current waves rather than assuming every part of the bay is equally suitable.
02
Getting to Weligama
Weligama is easy to reach by train, bus or road. The town has its own railway station on Sri Lanka’s Coast Line, between Midigama and Mirissa, with services connecting it to places such as Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Private transfers and buses are also convenient, particularly if you are arriving from elsewhere on the south coast. Tuk-tuks are useful for short journeys between Weligama, Mirissa and nearby surf breaks.
03
Where to stay
Stay close to Weligama Bay if you want surf schools, cafés and the beach within walking distance.
For a quieter stay, look towards Midigama or the edges of the bay, where the atmosphere is more relaxed but you may need tuk-tuks to reach central Weligama.
For most travellers, two or three nights is enough, while keen surfers may want to stay longer.
Signature Experience
Start early and head to Weligama Bay before the heat and crowds build.
The wide bay gives beginners plenty of space to practise, while more experienced surfers can continue towards other breaks along the coast.
Weligama is also known for its traditional stilt fishermen, a distinctive sight associated with this stretch of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline.
After your surf session, stay near the beach for breakfast or coffee and enjoy a slower morning. Weligama is at its best when you leave room for both activity and downtime.
Suggested stay
Settle into Weligama and spend your first day around the main bay.
Walk along the beach, explore the cafés and swim if conditions are suitable.
Finish with a relaxed evening near the coast.
Start the morning with a surf lesson or independent session, depending on your experience.
Later, explore nearby areas such as Midigama or Ahangama, or keep the afternoon free for more beach time.
Return to Weligama for dinner and another easy evening.
Use your final day for a short trip to Mirissa, or stay in Weligama for another surf session and relaxed morning.
If you prefer a slower pace, spend the day around the bay before continuing along Sri Lanka’s south coast.
