Why visit Nuwara Eliya

Tea country in Sri Lanka’s highlands

Nuwara Eliya feels very different from Sri Lanka’s tropical coast. Cool air, misty hills, tea estates and old colonial era buildings give the town a distinctive high country atmosphere.
It is also one of the best bases for exploring Sri Lanka’s tea country, visiting Horton Plains and slowing down between longer journeys through the island

Essential planning

Know before you go

01

When to visit

January to April is generally a good period for clearer hill country views. Mornings are often the best time for outdoor activities, while mist and cloud can build later in the day.
Pack a light jacket or jumper, as evenings and early mornings can feel noticeably cooler than Sri Lanka’s lowlands.

02

Getting to Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya has no main-line railway station. Travellers arriving by train use Nanu Oya, then continue by taxi, tuk-tuk or pre-arranged transfer.
Road connections also link Nuwara Eliya with Kandy, Ella, Hatton and other hill-country destinations. If using a tuk-tuk or independent driver, agree the fare before starting your journey.

03

Where to stay

Stay near the town centre if you want easy access to restaurants, shops and Gregory Lake.
For a quieter experience, choose accommodation among the surrounding tea estates or hills, where you are more likely to find wider views and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Signature Experience

Walk Horton Plains at first light

Leave Nuwara Eliya early and aim to reach Horton Plains soon after opening. The main circular trail is around 9 km and typically takes about three hours, passing cloud forest, open grassland, Baker’s Falls and the dramatic World’s End viewpoint.
Early morning offers the best chance of clear views before cloud begins to roll across the plateau. Bring water, comfortable walking shoes and a warm layer for the start of the day.
