Why visit Hatton

The heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country

Hatton sits high in Sri Lanka’s central hills, surrounded by tea estates, forested mountains, waterfalls and deep blue reservoirs. At around 1,270 metres above sea level, the town has long been closely connected with Sri Lanka’s tea industry and offers a quieter alternative to more tourist-focused hill-country destinations.
Hatton is also the main gateway for travellers heading towards Adam’s Peak, but there is plenty to experience without climbing the mountain. The tea-covered landscapes around Dickoya and Castlereagh are among the most beautiful in the region and reward travellers who slow down for a night or two.

Essential planning

Know before you go

01

When to visit

January to March generally offers some of the clearest and drier conditions for exploring Hatton’s tea country and viewpoints.
If climbing Adam’s Peak is part of your trip, the main climbing period runs roughly from December to April, when the pilgrimage route is most active. Mountain weather can change quickly at any time of year, so bring a light rain layer even when the morning starts clear.

02

Getting to Hatton

Hatton is on Sri Lanka’s Colombo–Badulla railway line, making the train one of the most scenic ways to arrive from Colombo, Kandy or other hill-country towns. Hatton is also an official station for reserved-ticket services.
Buses and private transfers connect Hatton with nearby destinations. If you are continuing to Nallathanniya for Adam’s Peak, you will need to travel onwards by road from Hatton.

03

Where to stay

Stay close to Hatton town if you want easy access to the railway station, buses, local restaurants and onward transport.
For a more scenic experience, consider accommodation around Dickoya or Castlereagh Reservoir, where tea estates and mountain views create a much quieter atmosphere. Check the exact location before booking, as properties outside town may require tuk-tuk or private transport. Sri Lanka Tourism highlights Castlereagh Reservoir and the surrounding tea estates as key attractions around Hatton.

Signature Experience

Explore the tea country around Castlereagh

Leave Hatton in the morning and travel through Dickoya towards Castlereagh Reservoir, passing hills covered almost entirely in tea.
The landscape changes constantly as narrow roads weave between estates, small settlements and viewpoints overlooking the water.
Castlereagh Reservoir is surrounded by rolling green hills and tea plantations, creating one of the most peaceful landscapes around Hatton. Tea has shaped the town and surrounding region since the colonial period and remains central to local life today.
Rather than rushing between attractions, allow time to stop at viewpoints, watch daily life in the estates and simply enjoy the cooler mountain atmosphere.
