Why visit Arugambay
Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s best known surfing destination, but you do not need to surf to enjoy it. Long beaches, sunrise walks, relaxed cafés and the slower rhythm of the east coast make it an easy place to stay for several days.
Beyond the main beach, Pottuvil, Peanut Farm and nearby wildlife areas add enough variety for travellers who want more than a beach holiday.

Essential planning
01
When to visit
May to September is the best period for most international travellers, bringing the main surf season and generally drier conditions on Sri Lanka’s east coast.
April and October can also offer good surf, while the northeast monsoon makes the area wetter and quieter later in the year.
02
Getting to Arugam Bay
Most travellers reach Arugam Bay by road. Private transfers are the easiest option from Ella, the Cultural Triangle or Colombo, while long-distance buses connect through Pottuvil and other eastern towns.
Arugam Bay has no railway station. Travelling by train usually involves reaching Batticaloa and continuing by road, so it is rarely the most convenient option for visitors heading directly to the bay.
03
Where to stay
Stay near Arugam Bay Beach and Main Point if you want cafés, restaurants, surf schools and the liveliest atmosphere within walking distance.
For quieter nights, look towards the edges of Arugam Bay or closer to Pottuvil. Check the exact location before booking, as some accommodation described as Arugam Bay can be several kilometres from the main beach area.
Signature Experience
Wake early and head towards the beach as the first light reaches the east coast. Experienced surfers can make the most of Arugam Bay’s famous point breaks, while beginners can arrange lessons at more suitable breaks nearby.
Even if you do not surf, sunrise is one of the best times to experience Arugam Bay. Fishing boats return to shore, the beach is quieter and the heat of the day has not yet arrived.
If you are new to surfing, tell your instructor your experience level and choose a lesson suited to current sea conditions rather than selecting a break based only on reputation.
Suggested stay
Settle into Arugam Bay, explore the main beach and spend the afternoon getting familiar with the town.
Finish the day with a relaxed meal near the beach and an early night if you plan to surf the following morning.
Start early with a surf session or beginner lesson while conditions are cooler.
Keep the afternoon relaxed with beach time, cafés or a short tuk-tuk trip towards Pottuvil. If travelling by tuk-tuk, agree the fare before leaving.
Use the morning to explore beyond the main bay. Pottuvil Point and quieter beaches such as Peanut Farm show a very different side of the coastline.
Some routes pass through wildlife areas where elephants may be present, so use an experienced local driver and never approach or attempt to photograph wild elephants at close range.
