Why visit Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s first great capital and remains one of the country’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage cities. Vast stupas, ancient monasteries, reservoirs and sacred sites are spread across a landscape that was at the centre of political and religious life for more than a thousand years.
At its heart is the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the sacred Bodhi tree associated with the Buddha’s enlightenment. Alongside it, monuments such as Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri reveal the extraordinary scale of the ancient city.

Essential planning
01
When to visit
Anuradhapura is hot for much of the year, so begin sightseeing early and keep the hottest part of the afternoon lighter.
January to March and June to September generally offer drier conditions. Poson, usually celebrated around June, is one of the most important Buddhist periods in Anuradhapura and nearby Mihintale, bringing large numbers of pilgrims.
02
Getting to Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura is well connected by train, bus and road. Trains run from Colombo towards Anuradhapura and Sri Lanka’s north, while private transfers are particularly convenient when travelling from Sigiriya, Dambulla or other Cultural Triangle destinations.
Unlike Sigiriya, Anuradhapura has its own railway station, making rail a practical option for international travellers. Check the latest railway timetable before travelling, as schedules can change.
For short journeys around the city, tuk-tuks are convenient. Agree the fare before starting your journey when using tuk-tuks or independent drivers.
03
Where to stay
Stay around Anuradhapura’s modern town if restaurants, shops and transport connections are most important.
Accommodation closer to the Sacred City offers a quieter setting and makes early-morning sightseeing easier. Because the archaeological area is extensive, check the location of your accommodation before booking rather than choosing solely by distance from the town centre.
Signature Experience
Begin exploring the Sacred City in the cooler morning hours, then return towards Ruwanwelisaya later in the day. The enormous white stupa remains an active place of worship, and the atmosphere changes as local pilgrims arrive with flowers and offerings.
Rather than treating Anuradhapura only as a collection of ruins, spend some time simply observing the living religious traditions around the sacred sites. Dress respectfully and give worshippers space, particularly during ceremonies and busy pilgrimage periods.
Suggested stay
Start early with the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya before temperatures rise. Continue through the ancient city to sites such as Thuparamaya, Abhayagiri and Jetavanaramaya.
Take a break during the hottest part of the afternoon, then return later for a slower visit to the sacred area. A tuk-tuk or hired driver makes it much easier to cover the large distances between monuments.
Travel to Mihintale, around 11–12 km from Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The complex spreads across hills and includes stupas, rock shelters and long stairways, so comfortable footwear is useful.
Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the strongest heat. Afterwards, return to Anuradhapura for a relaxed afternoon or continue towards your next Cultural Triangle destination.
